Senior Cultural Aboriginal Guide at Sydney Zoo

Sydney Zoo is a new, large metropolitan Zoo in Western Sydney. Sydney Zoo showcases a broad range of native and exotic animals using modern technology and advanced exhibit design with a strong focus on animal welfare and conservation, educating our visitors about animals and their habitats. Environmental and social awareness also plays a vital role in our messaging, focusing on indigenous culture and human influence on the environment.

The Position

This is an outstanding opportunity to be part of an exciting new zoo in the role of Senior Cultural Aboriginal Guide on a casual basis, utilising your skills in an area that you are genuinely passionate about. This role will commence as soon as possible.

The Senior Cultural Aboriginal Guide will be responsible for leading a team of younger Aboriginal Guides and the ongoing development and presentation of informative Aboriginal cultural information to Sydney Zoo audiences of all ages, including school groups and the general public.

Skills, Knowledge and Relevant Experience

  • Aboriginality – including demonstrated ability to work effectively with the Aboriginal community, tour operators and visitors in tourism, education or cultural setting. (Note that this is a genuine Aboriginal position as defined by Section 14 of the NSW Anti-Discrimination Act 1977)
  • Understanding and experience in working with Elders and other knowledge holders in the appropriate use and transmission of information to visitors and the general public.
  • Experience and demonstrated ability to personally undertake the delivery of cultural education programs and presentation of Aboriginal knowledge content in a culturally appropriate and authentic manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to present cultural information in a range of settings, (including large groups) in an entertaining but educative format.
  • Skills and ability to deal with difficult clients and stakeholders who may lack cultural sensitivity, empathy or understanding of the Aboriginal experience in Australia.
  • Experience in supporting young Aboriginal people in the workplace.
  • At least 12 months in related work in Tourism, Education or other related employment.
  • Driver’s license and first aid certificate.


  • Certificate III in Tour Guiding or Culture related training or equivalent Demonstrated ability in delivering cultural talks or presentation to non-Aboriginal stakeholder organisations.
  • Experience in supervising work teams or organisations in the tourism or cultural heritage sectors.
  • Ability to mentor younger Aboriginal staff including workplace trainees.
